Balochistan Earthquake

20 DEAD AND 200 DISPLACED

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck in the early hours of Thursday while people were sleeping. Rescue workers said the dead were mostly women and children.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was shallow at 20 kms (12 miles) with an epicentre 102 km (62 miles) east of Quetta. The Harnai district was hit the hardest, but the tremors were felt in Quetta, Sibi, Mastung, Shahrag and other adjoining areas as well.

More than 20 people have been reported dead with women and children making up a large number of deceased. The earthquake has been devastating, causing havoc and casualties at 3 am Thursday morning.

Over a 100 mud houses were destroyed, rendering many people homeless. Many government buildings were damaged too. About 150 wounded and injured people were moved to the hospital for treatment. Rescue efforts are underway with priority being given to the earthquake victims.

Hospitals nearby have declared emergency and have been treating patients under emergency lights and flashlights because there’s been a power outage since the earthquake. Some critically injured persons have also been transported to the Rawalpindi hospital.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The government is making the best efforts to provide paramedics and rescue teams to speed up the recovery and rescue process. However, the need is great and we urge the civilians to come together to the aid of those affected. Necessary items like food and shelter are much needed within the community. For £50, you can provide a family with food for a month.
